Galatians 5:22 - The Message

But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.

Galatians 5:22 - Additional Comments

"Fruit" is something that is produced inherently, as a result of birth. This is inherent in us once we are born into Jesus.
"Spittin' image" comes from "spirit and image" or "spit and image" ("spit" meaning having been spit out of your father's mouth, or just like him). We become the "spittin' image" of our Father, taking on His Spirit and image.
Since we have the Spirit in us, this should define our character, who we have become in Christ. Place your name in place of "the Spirit" in these verses, and ask how true is this statement.
When the Spirit controls us, when we are filled with the Spirit (Acts 13:9, Eph 5:18), we act like this, in the same way the Christ did. This describes the nature of Christ - He was always filled with these character traits.
"Faithfulness" is translated "faith" in KJV. In Greek it means conviction of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God; belief, faith, fidelity. Root word means "truth".
(See notes on verse 5:19)
Love - spending personal time with God including worship; doing for others; spending time in fellowship and church
Joy - spending personal time with God including worship; long prayer sessions; sharing Christ with others
Peace - spending personal time with God including worship; thinking on the things of God (Phil 4:8); quickly resolve conflicts; see sources for Jealousy
Longsuffering (patience) - giving everything to God; setting aside personal rights; same sources as Hatred
Kindness - same sources as Love
Goodness - privately study God's Word and look for what God is telling you personally
Faithfulness - never lie (even small deceptions); always keep your word; be on time; keep appointments
