1 Corinthians 5:2 - Additional Comments

How could the church be puffed up, arrogant? Paul was writing this difficult letter to the Corinthian church because they had sin in their midst and were thinking they were doing okay, that everything was alright. The arrogance was probably that they felt they were doing a good job when they were doing a miserable job by ignoring obvious sin. (See vs 6 - they were glorying in this.)
What state are in we without God? We are sinners.
(Psa 14:3) They have all turned aside, They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one.
(Isa 64:6) But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.
(Jer 17:9) "The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
What state are we in as Christians? We are sinners who have the prompting and help of the Holy Spirit to obey.
(1 Ki 8:46) "When they sin against You (for there is no one who does not sin), and You become angry with them and deliver them to the enemy,...
(Eccl 7:20) For there is not a just man on earth who does good And does not sin.
(Rom 7:8) But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire....
Read Romans 7:14-25.
(Rom 8:26) Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
(2 Cor 9:8) And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed;
Is this person who is sinning a Christian?
(1 Cor 6:9) Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,
(1 Cor 6:10) nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
(1 Cor 6:11) And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
(Luke 5:32) "I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance."
(Luke 13:5) "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."
(Acts 3:19) "Repent therefore and return, that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;
If you continue in sin without repentance you will perish as a non-Christian. With repentance, you have eternal life.
The implication in this passage is the sinner mentioned is continuing in his sin without repentance, but at one time was repentant, and therefore a Christian (for Paul believed he would be going to heaven vs 5).
Even though we may have an idea about whether a person is saved or not, we are not to judge or condemn another person as unsaved.
(Rom 2:1) "Therefore you are without excuse, every man of you who passes judgment, for in that you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things."
(Rom 14:12-13) "So then each one of us shall give account of himself to God. Therefore let us not judge one another anymore..."
So, we are not to judge another's salvation, but this passage does tell us how to deal with someone in the church who is sinning without an effort to change.
The critical issue is what is your heart, your attitude, in correcting someone else in the church. Is it in self interest or to help them and help the church?
