1 Kings 2:1 - The Message
When Davids time to die approached, he charged his son Solomon, saying, "Im about to go the way of all the earth, but you—be strong; show what youre made of! Do what God tells you. Walk in the paths he shows you: Follow the life-map absolutely, keep an eye out for the signposts, his course for life set out in the revelation to Moses; then youll get on well in whatever you do and wherever you go. Then God will confirm what he promised me when he said, If your sons watch their step, staying true to me heart and soul, youll always have a successor on Israels throne.

Summary of 1 King 2: David gave his final words to Solomon, to follow God, but also to do justice to David's enemies. David died. David had reigned 7 years in Hebron and 33 years in Jerusalem. Solomon became firmly established as king. Adonijah asked Bathsheba for permission to marry Abishag, who was the virgin who had recently been selected to take care of David until his death. So, Bathsheba sent to Solomon with this request (Adonijah was Solomon's older brother). Solomon had Benaiah kill Adonijah. Solomon removed Abiathar as priest, but told him he would not kill him. Solomon had Benaiah pursue Joab, one of David's enemies that he had mentioned just before he died, and Benaiah killed Joab. Apparently Joab was commander of the army, for once Joab was killed, Solomon put Benaiah in his place over the army. Solomon also put Zadok in as priest in the place of Abiathar. Shimei was one of David's followers, but had not been faithful to David (David mentioned him as an enemy before David died.) Solomon charged Shimei to build a house, but never leave the city. Not longer after, 2 slaves belonging to Shimei had escaped, so Shimei went after them, leaving the city. Solomon heard, and had Benaiah kill him.
