1 Kings 3:1 - Additional Comments

Summary of 1 King 3: Solomon made a treaty with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and married Pharaoh's daughter. Solomon started building his own house, and the house of the LORD, and the wall all around Jerusalem. The people sacrificed to God at the high places, because there was no place built yet where they could sacrifice. Solomon also sacrificed to God in the high places. He culminated it with the sacrifice of 1000 burnt offerings at Gibeon, the great high place (vs 4). God must have been pleased with the sacrifices, because at Gibeon is where God appeared to Solomon in a dream (3:5-15), asked Solomon what he wished for (3:5), and granted his wish for wisdom (3:12), plus additionally, what Solomon did not ask for, riches and honor above anyone else during his reign (3:13). He also gave the promise of a long life, but with a condition - that Solomon would walk in the ways of God (3:14). Soon afterwards, 2 harlots came to him. They were roommates, and each had birthed a child around the same time, but one of the children had died, so each claimed the remaining child was theirs. Solomon ordered for the child to be cut in 2 to give each woman half, but the real mother pleaded not, so Solomon knew who the real mother was. People heard about Solomon's great wisdom and feared him.
