1 Samuel 17:1 - Additional Comments

David lived around the 11th century B.C.
The Philistines, originally known as the Sea Peoples, had arrived from the Aegean area, generally where Greece is located. When they arrived in the Middle East around 14th-13th century B.C., they originally tried to settle in Egypt, but were repulsed, and came to settle in southern Palestine, where they threatened Israel, until they were finally conquered by David (2 Sam 5:25), and mostly disappeared after that.
This area where the Philistines confronted Israel was directly west of Bethlehem, about 1/2 way to the Mediterranean Sea.
