1 Samuel 9:6 - Additional Comments

"This city" is Ramah, where Samuel lived (7:17).
What is the test of a true prophet? When all that he says comes true. This was Samuel's reputation. Samuel was a true prophet. When Samuel was a young prophet, "the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground" (3:19).
Samuel was, as far as we can tell, the single prophet in Israel at this time. Saul and his servant were going to ask the prophet, not for a word from God, a request for healing, or other such troubles, but to learn where their lost donkeys were. It appears these donkeys were of importance to them in that donkeys were a source of income for them. We can see by their extensive search for the donkeys that the donkeys were of high value to them. Most people would rather be told their fortune than told their duty, how to be rich than how to be saved. Why? because that is where their passion lies. Oh God, teach me to have a passion for the things of You, rather than the things of the world!
Note they had no personal experience with Samuel. What they said he was Samuel's well known reputation. If I asked a dozen people who know you, what would they say about you? What is the first thing that comes to their minds? Is this what you want, and does it honor God?
