Exodus 1:12 - Additional Comments

The taskmasters weren't there just to guide them in their tasks, but were also to be oppressive and harsh with them, with increasing severity.
Over the centuries, infidels have sought to destroy the Israelites, Christianity, and the Bible, to see it only grow stronger.
The Israelites became around 4 million people (see notes on Exo 12:37). This point is probably around 4 generations or so after Joseph, so at this time there were roughly 5000 Israelites. And this growth was despite the utmost severity with which they were treated.
Man cannot defeat the purpose of God, as we see here, and, for example, in Luke 4:28-30, where they tried to kill Jesus, but He just walked away from the lynching.
God had His purpose, and would accomplish it (Isa 46:10 "My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure"), even though the Israelites generally did not follow God during their time in Egypt (Joshua 24:14, Ezek 20:8). Yet, I'm sure there were plenty who still worshipped God - I think of the way America is today, and how you could generalize that we no longer follow God as a nation, yet there are plenty among us who do.
