John 14:18 says Jesus will not leave us as "orphanos", which can mean all of these -- bereaved, orphan, comfortless, fatherless. Notice the anguish in being an orphan.
God tells us to visit orphans "in their trouble" (James 1:27).
The Nation Adoption Center terms it's children "America's Waiting Children".
They have no foundation to give them stability.
The 7 year old girl from Russia asked, a few months after being adopted, "Why did you pick me?" We were fatherless, comfortless, and God picked us (Heb 9:15).
Through Jesus Christ, we are no longer servants, but we become children of God, members of His family, with all the privileges and inheritance. What about this inheritance?
-- (Eph 1:13-14) The Holy Spirit in us is the guarantee of the inheritance.
-- (Eph 1:18) They are rich, glorious.
-- (Col 3:24) It is a reward.
-- (1 Peter 2:1) It is reserved in heaven, so it cannot be damaged or lose its value
-- (Job 11:7-9) There is no limit to the inheritance, so the inheritance is not divided -- it is infinite
What is it that gives us the privilege of adoption, to be considered one of God's sons? Faith in Jesus. (See Heb 11:6, John 1:12, Eph 2:8-9).
When we become His sons, we now receive his discipline but also His love (Prov 3:12).
