Genesis 26:16 - Additional Comments
Abimelech was king of the Philistines, and located in Gerar. He was told by Abraham that Sarah, Abraham's wife, was Abraham's sister. After Abimelech took Sarah into his harem, he was warned in a dream that Sarah was actually Abraham's wife, and that his taking Sarah was the cause of temporary sterility among Abimelech's people and flocks. Indignant at Abraham's deceit, Abimelech sent Sarah back to her husband, gave him gifts, and asked him to leave. Later, after a squabble over a well, Abraham and Abimelech made a treaty at Beersheba. A variation of the stories of Abimelech and Abraham portrays Abimelech and Isaac going through exactly the same situations. See Genesis 20-21.
