Hebrews 12:1

King James Version (KJV)

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Hebrews 12:1 - Amplified Bible

THEREFORE THEN, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off {and} throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to {and} entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance {and} steady {and} active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us,

Hebrews 12:1 - The Message

Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!

Hebrews 12:1 - New American Standard Bible

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

Hebrews 12:1 - World English Bible

Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Hebrews 12:1 - Young's Living Translation

Therefore, we also having so great a cloud of witnesses set around us, every weight having put off, and the closely besetting sin, through endurance may we run the contest that is set before us,

Hebrews 12:1 - Additional Comments

Consider the race. It has been marked out for us, by Jesus (see vs 2-3), the Word of God, and by the examples of the cloud of witnesses we read about in chapter 11. If you don't know where to run, allow these to show you the path.
Are you running, or are you watching? Are you on the balcony watching, or a you on the road? Balconeers and runners discuss the same issues, but balconeers face issues theoretically, while runners face the same issues practically. For example, on the issue of sin, balconeers may consider how sin can co-exist with God's goodness, while runners consider how to conquer sin along the road.
The race consists of 2 parts, the preparation (laying aside the weights), and the performance (running the race). How difficult it is to run with weights; how difficult it is to live the Christian life burdened with weights. These weights may be sin, but they may also be an inappropriate concern for the things of this life, whether they be safety, money, health, anything that hinders your running the race. How difficult it is to run the Christian race weighed down by these burdens. What weights have crept into your life that are hindering your race? What weights could come into your life unless you are prepared? Our challenge is to lay these weights aside.
There is a qualification to run the race - laying aside sin. This sin so easily ensnares us, traps us. If we dabble in a little sin, before we know it, it has ensnared us. If we read that a Christian leader has fallen, we wonder how he fell so far. He didn't. He fell a little, and then before he knew it, he was trapped in it.
It says to run with patience, with endurance. This Christian life is a marathon, not a sprint. New Christians sometimes take off in a sprint, and get tired and wonder what happened. We need to realize that we are in this for the long haul.
