Hebrews 12:14 - The Message
Work at getting along with each other and with God. Otherwise youll never get so much as a glimpse of God. Make sure no one gets left out of Gods generosity. Keep a sharp eye out for weeds of bitter discontent. A thistle or two gone to seed can ruin a whole garden in no time. Watch out for the Esau syndrome: trading away Gods lifelong gift in order to satisfy a short-term appetite. You well know how Esau later regretted that impulsive act and wanted Gods blessing—but by then it was too late, tears or no tears.

Hebrews 12:14 - Additional Comments
We are to seek peace (Psa 34:14), to pursue peace, with ALL people. Not just who we want to pursue peace with. Especially with a brother or sister in Christ - Matt 5:23-24 says to interrupt what you are doing to be reconciled.
One critical part of making peace with others is not being the instigator of strife.
- We are to speak softly, not harshly (Prov 15:1) - does your tone instigate trouble in your house, at your job, etc.? Who is the initiator of strife? Is it always the other person?
- Do you have a root of bitterness that you can't let go (vs 15)? We are to lay it aside (Eph 4:31-32).
- Do the words that come from your mouth stab like a sword, or are they healing and comforting (Psa 64:3, Rom 3:13-14, 2 Cor 1:3-4)?
Take a look in the mirror (James 1:23-25).
It says unless you are able to have peace with others, they will not want to come to Christ, even if others share with them.
What could be the result of not doing this? See vs 15-17.
