Hosea 1:1 - Additional Comments
Hosea is the first book of the 12 books of the minor prophets, so called because of the size of the books, not because of the size of the ministry they performed. The Jews used to keep these 12 books as one book. Nine of these prophets prophesied before the captivity, and the last three after the return of the Jews to their own land.
This book at the start reveals that Hosea was a prophet, for the word of the Lord was given directly to him to convey to the people.
Hosea lived some time before Isaiah. The ancients say he was of Bethshemesh, and of the tribe of Issachar. He continued very long a prophet; the Jews reckoned that he prophesied nearly 90 years; so that, as Jerome observes, he prophesied of the destruction of the kingdom of the ten tribes when it was at a great distance, and lived himself to see and lament it, and to improve it afterwards as a warning to the Southern Kingdom.
Hosea, or Hoshea (the same origin as Joshua and Jesus), signifies a saviour. He wrote his prophecy to reveal sin, and to proclaim the judgments of God against a people that would not reform.
His writings are concise, and somewhat disjoint, like Proverbs. He wrote more sayings than sermons.
Huetius observes that many passages in the prophecies of Jeremiah and Ezekiel seem to be borrowed from Hosea, who wrote a good while before them. As Jer 7:34; Jer 16:9; Jer 25:10; and Eze 26:13 speak the same with Hos 2:11; so Eze 16:16, etc., is taken from Hos 2:8. And the promise of serving the Lord their God, and David their king, Jer 30:8, Jer 30:9. Eze 34:23, Hosea had written before, Hos 3:5. And Eze 19:12 is taken from Hos 13:15. Thus one prophet confirms and corroborates another; and all these work from the same Spirit.
It's always been considered canon, which is verified by the many times it is quoted in the New Testament - Matt 2:15, 9:13, 12:7, Rom 9:25-26, 1 Peter 2:10
