Should Christians Support Israel?

I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Genesis 12:3

If you believe as most Evangelicals do, with the position that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, infallible Word of God, and you understand that this passage refers to the Jewish nation, then you will understand the Biblical basis for our stand in relation to the Jews and the nation of Israel.

This does not imply that Christians agree specifically with every act of the nation of Israel, nor necessarily with the policies of its leaders or its people, but rather that Evangelicals accept the Word of God and His injunction with regard to our basic position in relation to the Jews and Israel. It would not be uncommon to find Evangelical leaders disagreeing on specifics of policies, procedures, and actions of the Jewish nation, but at the base of things would be an agreement on this passage from Genesis, along with several other passages in the Bible.

With regard to the question concerning Christian’s support of the nation of Israel, please note the following thoughts from Dr. Jerry Falwell:

“In the past twenty years, fundamentalists and evangelicals, at a very rapid pace, have been ‘converting’ to support for Israel. Leading pastors and preachers across the nation have begun taking a very courageous stand on what they have always believed theologically but have ever been willing to take a stand on practically. With every passing day, the number of supporters of Israel is outdistancing those that oppose Israel in the Evangelical-Christian community” (Jerry Falwell And The Jews, pg. 88).

It is very important to emphasize that, as Christians, we believe that “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life,” (John 3:16). Translated into modern activity, this means that we are deeply concerned with every human being on the face of the earth as one whom God has created and as one for whom Jesus Christ has died on Calvary. We feel it is, therefore, our urgent mission to get the gospel of Jesus Christ out to as many people as possible, as quickly as possible, and by every legitimate means as possible.
