Have you even planted sod, and had the richest, healthiest grass you've ever seen? But before long, the worries of the world and the deceitfulness of riches (Matt 13:19-23), i.e. the heat and the bugs and the diseases, turn it brown and decaying. How frustrating. But imagine God seeing the same thing in the Israelites.
There was so much hope for them - they were the chosen people. What happened? They let sin slip in, and didn't fight it. We need to hate sin, to fight sin with everything we have. Otherwise it will be like a disease that creeps in slowly and expands beyond repair.
