Jeremiah 26:3

If so be they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way, that I may repent me of the evil, which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings.

Wow, what grace God is ready to bestow, if only they would come back to Him. Despite all their previous failures, God would relent if they now would but come to Him. But, they were so entrenched in their evil way that they would not.
The priests had been actually drawing the people away from God. What a twist, that those who were put in a position to draw people to God were in reality doing the opposite.
