Jeremiah 35:6 - Additional Comments

Jonadab was famous in his time for wisdom and piety. He lived when Jehu was king of Israel, nearly 300 years before this, when we find him courted by the rising prince, when Jonadab appeared zealous for God (2 Kings 10:15-16). Jehu sought the affirmation of the people by having so good a man as Jonadab ride in the chariot with him.
It is amazing first, that the words of Jonadab were preserved by his family 300 years later, and second, that 300 years later we find his family still obeying those words.
Jonadab forbade them to drink wine, according to the law of the Nazarites (see notes on verse 8).
The response was immediate and decisive -- there was no question in their minds what they would do. Long before the wine was laid out, they had made their decision. One of the reasons we struggle with certain sins is because we have not yet made the decision ahead of time of what our response will be. What do you struggle with? Have you left the door open to sometimes fall, or have you determined ahead of time what your response will be?
Wine is indeed given to make glad the heart of man (Psa 104:15) and we are allowed the sober and moderate use of it. Why not use it?
- We are so prone to abuse it and get hurt by it (Prov 23:29-35)
- A Christian, who has his heart made continually glad with the light of God's countenance, has so little need of it for that purpose (Psa 4:6, Psa 4:7)
- It is a commendable piece of self-denial (Gal 5:23, 2 Peter 1:6) either not to use it at all or very sparingly and medicinally, as Timothy used it - 1 Tim 5:23.
- It destroys lives.
- Drinking brings out the worse in people
- We need to stand for and live for things that bring out the best in people
- You can never escape people's perceptions of seeing you drinking as a Christian
- Why do things that are questionable, that are on the fence? Why not stay as far away from things in question as you can? Why ride the line?
- It can so easily damage the body
