Job 1:11 - Additional Comments

Note how little authority Satan has - only as far as God allows it. This is encouraging for us, knowing that Satan has no power beyond what God allows. Also, the demons could only act on Jesus permission (see Mark 5:13).
Also, Satan cannot see into the future like God can - Satan does not know that Job will eventually show the world how should react in difficult circumstances. Satan was hoping Job would no longer have a reason to curse God.
Some serve God out of fear of evil, out of fear of hell, or to take hold of all the blessings promised. What we learn is that God is to be served and feared because He is God, and for no other reason. We need to be careful about serving Him because of His blessings instead of because of who He is, although the blessings do encourage us to serve Him. Otherwise we are serving God because He has "bought" our loyalty. See Foxes Book of Martyrs for examples of those who served God for no other reason than because of who He is. If we serve Him for the wrong reasons, when those reasons go away (as they did with Job), we no longer have a reason to serve Him!
Note we are to teach our children to obey God and obey us for no other reason than because of who we are, and not because of consequences or rewards.
Another example of when Satan had a similar request - Luke 22:31-32 And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren."
