Martha expected that Jesus could have healed Lazarus if he had been sick, and (see vs. 22) considered that He still could do something. Yet (see vss. 24 and 39) she did not expect that Jesus could do anything for Lazarus at this point on this earth. We need to be careful not to limit what God can do (not to put Him in a box), and to always wait with anticipation what God will do next. We need to trust Him completely in every circumstance.
Martha in her pain never lost faith in Jesus, never thought God and Jesus made poor decisions. She was confident in Jesus. Yet she implied the timing was bad (and didn't blame Jesus for the bad timing).
Mary later (see vs. 32) reacts in the same way.
