Ever want to ask God some questions? Here was the equivalent. They could ask Jesus anything, and His response was as if God had responded. What an opportunity!
I know about the people I read about in the newspaper, like entertainers and political leaders. But I don't know them. Do you know about Jesus, or do you know Jesus? Have your read and heard about Him, or have you talked with Him? If we know Jesus, we know God.
What an amazing statement, to claim that you know God. Yet Jesus told them they know God! He said "you know Him"!
Do you know me? Is this a yes or no answer? It's both. You know me, but not completely. It is the same question we have to ask ourselves about God. If we are a Christian, knowing Jesus, we know Him, but not completely.
J. I. Packer, in Knowing God, Chptr 3:
What were we made for? To know God
What aim should we set ourselves in life? To know God.
What is the "eternal life" that Jesus gives? Knowledge of God. "This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, know you have sent" (John 17:3)
What is the best thing in life, bringing more joy, delight and contentment that anything else? Knowledge of God. "This is what the Lord says: 'Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom, or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understand and knows me." (Jer 9:23-24)
C. H. Spurgeon, in a sermon:
"The most excellent study for expanding the soul, is the science of Christ, and Him crucified, and the knowledge of the Godhead in the glorious Trinity. Nothing will so enlarge the intellect, nothing so magnify the whole soul of man, as a devout, earnest, continued investigation of the great subject of the Deity."
