John 21:16 - Additional Comments

Three time Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him, and three times Peter says he loves Him. But the English loses part of the conversation. It goes like this:
"Do you 'agape' Me?" "Yes, I 'phileo' You."
"Do you 'agape' Me?" "Yes, I 'phileo' You."
"Do you 'phileo' Me?" "Yes, I 'phileo' You."
'phileo' is to be a friend to, i.e. have affection for (denoting personal attachment, as a matter of sentiment or feeling; chiefly of the heart; sometimes translated 'kiss'; the Father 'phileo' the Son (John 5:20)
'agapao' is wider, embracing espec. the judgment and the deliberate assent of the will as a matter of principle, duty and propriety; chiefly of the head
The love in 1 Corinthians 13 is all 'agape'.
Apparently at this time there was not as much of a distinction between 'agape' and 'phileo' as there had been before the time of Christ.
