John 5:31 - Additional Comments

Jesus had just healed a paralytic of 38 years (verses 1-9). This took place on a Sabbath, so the Jews sought to kill Jesus (verse 16), and again because Jesus claimed God was His Father (verses 17-18). Jesus responded with a sermon, first asserting His authority as the Messiah (verses 19-30), followed by this passage, in which He proves it by the testimony of his Father, of John Baptist, of his miracles, and of the scriptures of the Old Testament (verse 31-47).
Deut 19:15 "... A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses." We have that shown here. See also John 8:17-18.
Jesus gave 4 Testimonies to support His claim that God sent Him.
1. The testimony of John the Baptist (verses 33-35)
2. His own miraculous works (verse 36)
3. His Father's testimony (verse 37)
4. The witness of the Scriptures (verse 39)
