Luke 5:1 - Additional Comments

This event (1-11) actually falls in time before the 2 miracles at the end of chapter 4 (4:33-35, 4:38-39). It was mentioned briefly in Matthew and Mark, of Christ's calling Peter and Andrew to be fishers of men, in Matt 4:18-20 and Mark 1:16-18. John readily admits that many of Jesus' miracles were not mentioned, but the ones that were specifically were listed to draw people to Christ (John 20:30-31).
The Lake of Gennesaret is the Sea of Galilee, which is the northern-most area that Jesus traveled. You could easily see across the lake, for the widest point was less than 7 miles across.
This takes place early in the morning, for the fishermen had been out all night (vs 5), and were finishing up by washing their nets (vs 2).
The crowd was large, which may have made it difficult to speak or hear clearly (for they pressed about Him) - they probably could not even see Him well. So He went out on a boat from which to teach (vs 3). What a passion the people had to hear Him, for they almost could not contain themselves - as compared to how the Pharisees would debate with Him. The crowd could tell there was something special about Jesus message. They could tell Jesus proclaimed the word of God.
Note that the crowds pressed about Him before he began His miracle or healing ministry - it was the words that drew them - the words of God. They coveted to hear these words. They were new and fresh to them.
The miracles confirmed the words.
