Mark 10:37 - Additional Comments

The Jews had a strong caste society, and when they sat, the caste order was displayed by their seating position. When they asked for these seats, they were also asking for the hierarchical position to be second in command next to Jesus.
Boy, did they have a wrong impression of what it would be like in His glory! They didn't realize that the transfiguration (Mark 9:2-8) was a glimpse of this glory. Who was given prestige in that moment? Not even Moses and Elijah - God made it clear it was only to be Jesus receiving the honor. And yet here James and John are asking for honor for themselves.
