Jesus words were so often cryptic. They could not have known, until they recalled his words, what He meant by being raised. I think they were not expect Jesus to die, so they probably just took this to mean He would go ahead of them and meet them back in Galilee. Wow, the thoughts that must have been going through their mind during the crucifixion - remembering His words, the events, the knowledge of who He is, etc. At this point they probably thought they had a reasonable idea of the puzzle of the gospel and Jesus life, but that puzzle fell apart at His death. Then, just a short time, a few days, later, it came together.
