Mark 5:8 - Additional Comments

Again (like 4:39) the words of Jesus have power.
We see both unclean and godly spirits referenced in the Bible (see Heb 1:7,13-14). What makes a spirit unclean? See 1 John 4:1 - these spirits are not of God, i.e. they sin. Sin controls them. How sad that these spirits are forever separated from God because of sin. Sin controls them, and sin will destroy them.
Is there sin that is controlling your life? Is there sin that seems to recur even though you intend to avoid it (Rom 7:19)? Or, is there unconfessed sin because you've seen the sin but quickly lose sight and forget its presence (James 1:22-25)? Or, is there unconfessed sin because of lack of looking at your life to see what God sees (Lam 3:40, Psalm 26:2, Psa 139:23-24)?
How do you conquer this evil, this sin? Examine yourself, acknowledge the sin, stay far away from the arena of that sin (run from it - Prov 4:14-15), accept and embrace God's forgiveness through Jesus, and delight yourself in God.
A great example of one who delighted in God - Augustine, transformed from the bonds of lust to the joy of passion for God. He could not tear himself away from his concubines, until one momentous day he was liberated. "Thou hast loosed my bonds. I will offer to Thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving. How evil have not my deeds been; or if not my deeds, my words; or if not my words, my will? But Thou, O Lord, art good and merciful, and Thy right hand had respect unto the profoundness of my death, and removed from the bottom of my heart that abyss of corruption. And this was the result, that I willed not to do what I willed, and willed to do what thou willedst. How sweet did it suddenly become to me to be without the delights of trifles! And what at one time I feared to lose, it was now a joy to me to put away. For Thou didst cast them away from me, Thou true and highest sweetness. Thou didst cast them away, and instead of them didst enter in Thyself, - sweeter than all pleasure, though not to flesh and blood; brighter than all light, but more veiled than all mysteries; more exalted than all honour, but not to the exalted in their own conceits. Now was my soul free from the gnawing cares of seeking and getting, and of wallowing and exciting the itch of lust. And I babbled unto Thee my brightness, my riches, and my health, the Lord my God."
