Matthew 16:23 - Additional Comments

What emotions Peter must have been going through in this conversation. First, elation that Jesus was resting His church on Peter's shoulders. And now, being told he is aligning with Satan!
Jesus called Peter Satan because Peter was hindering God's purpose on earth. The most critical thing that Jesus came to do was to die and rise from the dead. Anything going against His cause must be considered of Satan. As good intentioned as Peter was, he was wrong, very wrong.
We must never water down our speech when teaching the principles of God.
Always be mindful that your understanding of life and your worldview may not completely align with God's. In fact, your worldview cannot align with God's, because of our limited understanding of Him and His ways. So, with that, we must not be arrogant in our beliefs. Tell me, have you searched the Scriptures to solidify what you belief, or is it based on the church you attend? Tell me, can you align yourself with those who have endlessly and honestly search the Scriptures, and conclude that you need to speak in tongues? that baptism is or is not required for salvation? that you can or cannot lose your salvation? that you have no say in your salvation, or you are the one who needs to choose Christ? Tell me, do you think the scribes searched the writings of the Old Testament, looking for each little aspect of who the Messiah would be? And, what did they conclude about the Messiah?
So, how can we not water down our speech, yet keep in mind that our worldview has flaws? We must determine what is foundational/critical to our faith, such as inerrancy of Scripture, that Jesus is the only way, that faith is required, that God wants a relationship with each of us, and the God wants us to live holy and pure lives. Beyond those, we must also teach what we believe Scripture teaches based on our reading, because as we go through this process God works on us to get a better and clearer understanding of Him and His ways, and so our worldview come more and more into alignment with the one true world view -- God's.
