Nehemiah 1:2 - Additional Comments

Hanani was probably Nehemiah's blood brother, since he distinguished him from the other Jews as a brother. See also 7:2. Hanani was given charge of the rebuilding of Jerusalem (7:2).
Referring to the Jews who had escaped, they escaped captivity (Ezra 9:8,9,14, Ezekiel 6:9, 7:16, 24:25-27), and lived in other countries, like Egypt (Jer 44:14).
There were many Jews in Persia (see the story of Esther). Nehemiah had most likely been born and raised in Persia, since the destruction of Jerusalem and dispersal of the Jews was over 140 years earlier. The Jews in Persia may have descended from the Jews who had escaped the captivity.
