His body was starved and emaciated - he had become a skeleton, nothing but skin and bones. As prosperity and joy are represented by making fat the bones, so great trouble and grief are here cause the opposite. The author's bones are burned as a hearth (vs 3); they cling to his skin (vs 5); his heart is stricken and withered like grass (vs 4). He is withered like grass (vs 11), scorched with the burning heat of his troubles.
