Psalm 112:1 - Additional Comments

Psalm 112 is one of the 34 that have no heading on it. We do not know who the author was, or the circumstances in which it was written.
It is one of the alphabet or acrostic poems in Psalms - each line of poetry here begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This helped those who sang or memorized it.
This psalm is classified as a "wisdom" psalm. Its purpose is to teach people how to be successful in life, from God's viewpoint. The bottom line is we need to live our lives conforming to the Word of God.
As all prayers should start, this psalm, while not a prayer, begins the same - in praise of God. LORD here is the holiest name the Hebrews had for God - Yahweh.
The implication here is that this chapter talks about someone who basically has 2 traits - this person fears the Lord, and this person delights greatly in God's word.
Who is the most famous person you have ever met? How would you feel if you were called to the White House to meet with the President? Of if you are in a large company, how about if you had to meet with the CEO? Is there anyone like that who would totally intimidate you if you were to meet with them? How about a sports person, or an actor? What other famous people?
Prov 1:7 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,..."
Fearing the Lord - this is trembling in His presence, realizing how great, how awesome, how powerful, how loving, etc., God is. We need to fear God, in the sense of being overwhelmed by God, and humbly bowing before Him. This seems to be sorely missing with Christians. When we go before Him, do we tremble? Of course, we are also to relax with Him, for He gives us peace. But we also need to fully appreciate His greatness.
We are also to greatly delight in God's word. How can we do that? Probably the biggest thing is to appreciate what it can do for us. And this psalm tells us that!
