Psalm 116:11 - Additional Comments

In Psalm 39:1-3, the author tries to hold his tongue, but doesn't. Here, erroneous words, wrong words, were spoken in haste, without the guard on the tongue.
Prov 16:24 "Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones."
Ah, if only we could tame the tongue. Read James 3:2-12. This tells us "no man can tame the tongue" (James 3:8). Wow, is it hopeless? No.
Luke 6:45 "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks."
This says that what is in the heart eventually comes out. The way to fix the tongue is to fix the heart.
1. Pray for it - "Create in me a clean heart, O God..." Psa 51:10, "Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way." Psa 139:23-24
2. Memorize, meditate, follow Scripture - "Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!" Psa 119:11; ""This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success." Josh 1:8
3. Seek help from others - "Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, But he who hates correction is stupid." Prov 12:1; "Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety" Prov 11:14
4. Keep at it, persevere, never give up - ".. let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us" Heb 12:1; "to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life" Rom 2:7
