Psalm 135:1 - Additional Comments

This psalm is anonymous, but certain verses in the psalm suggest a member of the tribe of Levi wrote it (1-2, 19-20).
Joyous mention of the Lord's presence in Jerusalem show that the date it was written was well before the city's destruction by the Babylonians in 586 BC (vs 21).
Because of the psalm's emphasis on praise and it recognition of God's great acts in nature and history, this psalm is classified as a hymn.
"Lord" here, as it is whenever it is all caps, is Jehovah, Yahweh, God's highest name. The implication here is that we are to praise the name of God to the same extent we are to praise Him. His name identified who He is to us. We don't see and touch Him - we talk to Him, and talk about Him. In all our speech, His name is at the center. It perfectly represents who He is. And so, we are to praise His name - that praises Him.
Notice who is to praise Him - His servants. It doesn't say believers, it says servants. It is an assumption that believers are servants. Are you a servant? See servanthood.doc.
