Would you rather see the move or read the book? Most people in this age would rather see the movie. I'll get back to this.
The "speech" here is speech that is didactic, teaching those who hear. Note that knowledge/learning comes through nature both during the day and at night, i.e. any time, all the time.
"Utters" or "pours forth" means to pour out in abundance. Nature is daily, in excess, with continuous shouting, teaching us about God, pouring forth knowledge about Him and His glory (vs 1).
One of the reasons why I like photography is that it helps you to see God's handiwork and therefore His glory that you otherwise would miss, both in what you see in the world around you, plus in the world that others get to see that you don't. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. Yes it is. And interestingly, the picture can be a sermon about God.
Someone suggested that the reason why we don't see God's handiwork and marvel in awe at it continuously is because of our fallen nature, that God and the angels in heaven never tire in viewing the beauty of His creation. This verse is telling us to listen to the sermons given to us each day and night that we so often don't hear.
Notice that this speech is non-verbal, but visual - see verse 3. We know David loved the words of Scripture (verses 7 - 11), but he wanted first for us to focus on and learn from the non-verbal. The verbal is easy to "see" God in, while the visual takes more focus, more attention.
Yet we live in a time where most people would rather see the story rather than read the story. How may see the movie versus how many read the book? Yet they miss God's daily videos. God has given us the story of His glory, both in the Book and in the visual. We all love the visual so much, let's take the time to watch it, to see it.
