Here are practical steps (from Clyde Kilby, modified) to stay alive to the beauty of God's world.
1. I shall look up at the sky and remember that I, with a mind, a conscience, and God's spirit, am on a planet traveling in space with wonderfully mysterious things above me and about me.
2. Instead of the secular idea of a mindless and endless evolutionary change, I shall see the universe is guided by God which, as Aristotle said of Greek drama, requires a beginning, a middle and an end. There is a purpose in God's creation.
3. I shall not fall into the falsehood that this day, or any day, is merely another ambiguous and plodding twenty-four hours, but rather a unique event filled with worthy potentialities to serve God.
4. I shall not be fool enough to suppose that trouble and pain are merely evil darts in my existence but likely ladders to be climbed toward moral and spiritual completeness for God.
5. I shall not turn my life into a thin straight line which plods forward to its eventual end. I shall often wander from its course to enjoy my life with God, taking roads not normally travelled.
6. I shall not belittle my own uniqueness by the envy of others. I shall stop comparing myself to see what psychological or social categories I might see myself in. I shall simply forget about myself and do God's work for others.
7. I shall open my eyes and ears. Once every day I shall simply stare at a tree, a flower, a cloud, or a person, all part of God's creation. I shall not then be concerned at all to ask what they are but simply enjoy that they exist, that God has placed them there for me to see His glory.
8. I shall not allow the rush of the day to drain all my energies, but will instead, take in the freshness of the moment. I shall enjoy the journey.
9. I shall see the hope of the future, in the generations that will follow me, that I have transformed the waywardness of my ancestors, and given the new generations a solid foundation in God.
10. I shall know that this world is not idiotic, not run by an absentee landlord, but that today, this very day, God is with my life painting a new stroke on His canvas, that in due course I shall understand with joy the new addition, made by the great architect of it all, who calls Himself the Alpha and Omega.
