Asaph is the author of this psalm. He was a prophet or a seer in the time of David ( 2 Chron 29:30).
Psalm 73 is perhaps the most philosophical psalm in the Bible. Sometimes classified as a wisdom psalm, this is aligned with the book of Job in its frank approach to some of the more perplexing issues in life. For example, Why do wicked people prosper? Why do good things happen to bad people, especially when good people suffer? The answers here are similar to what we find in the book of Job.
The psalmist is noting that God is more readily giving of His goodness to those who are pure in heart. God is much more concerned with what is going on inside you than what people see on the outside. Plus, if the inside goodness is there, it will be reflected on the outside. But the outside can hide internal weakness, so the outside is not a good barometer of purity of heart.
Be careful not to test the purity of heart in others - you should be continually examining the purity of heart in you. Are you working towards being who God wants you to be?
