Zechariah 4:6 - Additional Comments

Regarding Zerubbabel, see notes on Zech 1:1.
It is critical that Zerubbabel understand what Zechariah is saying from God here. He is saying to succeed, they must depend primarliy on God, not their strength. They must depend on God for success.
"Depend" means "to place reliance or trust ". Depend implies a need that must be fulfilled by someone else. It also implies releasing control to that person. How much do you depend on God?
Deuteronomy 8:2-3 - the Israelites in the wilderness depended on God
Proverbs 3:5-8 - we are to trust God, even when we don't understand
Matthew 5:3 - those who are poor in spirit, who are broken, must depend on God
John 16:23-24 - we are encouraged to ask, so we can receive; we are to ask, depending on God for the results, for He promises results
1 Timothy 2:5 - we depend on Jesus to provide us a means to go to God.
Psalm 18:39-40 - any strength, skill, wisdom we have, we have from God
1 Cor 4:7 - everything we have is a gift, for what do you have that you have not received?
Isaiah 31:1 - despite any strength, skill, wisdom, it is God who give success, not the strength, skill, wisdom
Let me ask again, how much do you depend on God? Answer these questions -
- How much do you pray? Prayer gives God control, lack of prayer relies too much on yourself.
- How much is thankfulness in your prayers? This shows God you acknowledge His work in your life, and that you depend on Him for that work.
- Do you need God more when times are tough? Do you earnestly seek God even when things are well? Do you earnestly seek God for the things going well in addition to the things that are tough? Do you even notice God's involvement in the things that go well?
How can you depend more on God, depend completely on God? Spend time in prayer, give God control, seek His help in all things - the easy and the tough, see His involvement in all things, thank Him often.
