God had never mentioned a need for a better house. That is not God's focus. God does not place much value in external things, but on this things of the heart. This was David's idea, and God would let Israel buid him a house (in the time of Solomon), but God did not need it. We maybe should be careful about thinking that God is concerned about the value and quality of our church building. In fact, the great temple that Solomon built was torn down by Nebuchadnessar, king of Babylon, in sixth century B.C. so that not a stone of it can be found today.
