1 Corinthians 11:29 - The Message

If you give no thought (or worse, don’t care) about the broken body of the Master when you eat and drink, you’re running the risk of serious consequences. That’s why so many of you even now are listless and sick, and others have gone to an early grave. If we get this straight now, we won’t have to be straightened out later on. Better to be confronted by the Master now than to face a fiery confrontation later.

1 Corinthians 11:29 - New American Standard Bible

For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.

1 Corinthians 11:29 - Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy

Porque el que come y bebe sin discernir correctamente el cuerpo del Señor, come y bebe juicio para sì.

1 Corinthians 11:29 - World English Bible

For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, if he doesn`t discern the Lord`s body.

1 Corinthians 11:29 - Young's Living Translation

for he who is eating and drinking unworthily, judgment to himself he doth eat and drink -- not discerning the body of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 11:29 - Additional Comments

Paul said "not discerning the body" was the unworthy way of eating. "Discerning" means to "separate thoroughly".
Some of the Corinthians used Communion to eat a meal or even to get drunk - it was an excuse for a feast, They were not differentiating the food and drink of the Lord's Supper with food and drink of a common meal. They were treating it in an unholy manner.
To "separate thoroughly" means to keep it in a special place, to do it with the right perspective and attitude. See John 6:53-57. "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him." When we take the Lord's Supper, we are to be abiding in Christ. That means we need to examine our attitude, our heart, so see if what is there is preventing us from abiding in Him.
- Don't harbor a root of bitterness, of which many have become defiled (Heb 12:15)
- Consider the deeds of the flesh, "that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Gal 5:19-21). Included is hatred, selfish ambition, jealousy, drunkenness, not getting along with others, pornography, an unhealthy passion for anything over God, etc.
- What about a complaining spirit, a bragging spirit, love of money, impure meditations, laziness, substance addictions, an unforgiving spirit, an unteachable spirit, a critical spirit?
