All studies of the things of this world count to nothing (vs 6). There is no greater endeavor than to wrap yourself up in the study of Jesus and what He did (focusing on the main thing, the crucifixion). There is no greater knowledge. In direct comparison, no other discussion, no other analysis, compares to the ones focused on Him. Other studies are noble, but alas, vanity (Eccl 1:14), unless they draw us to Him.
The crucifixion and resurrection are critical, fundamental. It's what Christianity is built on, otherwise our faith is in vain - 1 Cor 15:14-17. It was for this reason that Paul claimed he was on trial - Acts 23:6.
Paul would not fit Jesus into the world, but would fit the world into Jesus. Jesus is the standard, and all else must conform to Him and His words.
This is the most important doctrine of the church, simply who is Jesus. We should study the whole counsel of God's Word, but as it relates to Jesus. He is the focal point at which all teachings converge.
The Pharisees held the Scripture in high regard, but they equated knowledge of Scripture as their basis for spirituality, rather than the proper focus on Jesus. The Scriptures are the means, and Jesus is the end. Jesus said, "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me" (John 5:39).
Every Biblical teaching that does not lift up Jesus (directly or indirectly) is irrelevant and possibly degrading to us as Christians.
Paul was warning them to focus on Jesus, "But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ" (2 Cor. 11:3).
Paul was an intellectual giant, trained as a Pharisee at the feet of the great Jewish scholar, Gamaliel (Acts 22:3). He probably could have taught on many subjects, yet he limited his preaching to one basic thing - Jesus.
