Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

We suffer (3:17), Christ suffered (3:18). We are to walk with the same mind, to walk in His steps (since he suffered as an example - 2:21).
Suffering actually helps to purify, helps to keep us clean from sin, to help us avoid the lusts of men (vs 2), and to help us be in the center of His will for us (vs 2).
