I have a special concern for you church leaders. I know what it’s like to be a leader, in on Christ’s sufferings as well as the coming glory. Here’s my concern: that you care for God’s flock with all the diligence of a shepherd. Not because you have to, but because you want to please God. Not calculating what you can get out of it, but acting spontaneously. Not bossily telling others what to do, but tenderly showing them the way.

This passage is written to the elders, to the spiritual guides of the church.
When Peter states that he is a fellow elder, any challenges he gives to them, he is also giving to himself. Note that those in leadership, when they exhort others to do their duty, must be careful to study and perform their own duties.
Peter was certainly a witness to most of the events between Christ's arrest and his resurrection. Despite his terrible failure of the 3 denials, he has learned to overcome that and openly state that he was there during Christ's sufferings. He has risen beyond his failure to serve Christ and look forward to the glory to be revealed.
The Catholic church claims Peter to be the first pope, but look at this difference in attitudes. Peter doesn't domineer, claim sovereignty over all the churches, claim to be the prince of the apostles, the vicar of Christ, the head of the church. He values himself as a fellow elder, like the others.
The suffering and trials we face can't even be compared to the glory we will receive (Romans 8:18).
