1 Samuel 13:1 - Additional Comments
We are transitioning from watching Samuel in his obedience to God and how God honored that, to Saul and his disobedience, and God punished for that. We look at Samuel, and we see obedience. We look at Saul, and we see disobedience. What do people see when they look at you? I have chosen not to drink for many reasons, but one is so when my children look at me, they don't see that having an influence in my life. I have chosen not to look at porn, even though 70% of men do (including in churches), and probably 99% want to, because when my children look at me, I want them to see a man who honors his wife and his God. I choose not to gamble, because I want my children to look to me as an example of how to manage finances. I choose not to swear, because I want my family and those at my work to see a difference, that God is honored. I choose to mow my own yard, because when my children look at me, they learn how to do hard work. I choose selflessness, because I want my children to see how to live in this world for success. I choose to try to honor God in all that I do, while not always successful, for many reasons, but partially so others can see it in action. Saul or Samuel, what do others see in you? Some of both? What needs to change?
Those that desired a king expected that, when they had one, they would look very great and respected; but in this chapter we find otherwise. While Samuel was working with Saul ,things went well (11:7). But, now that Saul begins to reign alone, all went to decay, and Samuel's words began to be fulfilled: "You shall be consumed, both you and your king" (12:25). Saul appears here a kind in much trouble. He was:
1. Infatuated in his decisions (13:1-3)
2. Invaded by the Philistines (13:4-5)
3. Deserted by his soldiers (13:6-7)
4. Worried, and disobedient (13:8-10)
5. Chided by Samuel (13:11-13)
6. Rejected of God from being king (13:14)
The people appear hear a very miserable people:
1. Disheartened and dispersed (13:6-7)
2. Diminished (13:15-16)
3. Plundered (13:17-18)
4. Disarmed (13:19-23)
This they got by casting off God's government, and making themselves like the nations: all their glory departed from them.
