The cubit is generally considered to be about 18 inches, and a span was about 9 inches.
Goliath's height is given in the MT [Hebrew, or Masoretic Text] of 1 Samuel 17:4 as six cubits and a span (9 ft 9 in), although textual traditions represented in the Dead Sea Scrolls (at Qumran), in Josephus, and the Septuagint give four cubits and a span (6 ft 9 in).
