The evil spirit's influence overcame Saul, and he reacted to it.
I wonder what David was thinking? Here was the king of Israel trying to kill him with a spear. Yet, he did not order anyone else to do kill him, probably because David was so well liked. But that quickly changed, as Saul soon did not care, and asked anyone to kill David (19:1).
