1 Samuel 20:4 - Additional Comments

Jonathan was more loyal to David than his father, which in this case was justified, as he knew was Saul was doing was sin (see also 20:9). Later, Saul's servants refused to kill Abimelech and the other priests, even though Saul had commanded it (22:17).
Even though we are told to obey those in authority (to your employers and managers, to elders, to political and law enforcement, wifes to husbands), we should not do so when it is clearly sin. But also, we need to be careful if we are in a position to obey, that we don't make excuses to avoid our responsibility - God has placed them there for a reason. But also, even more so, if we are in a position of leadership (which we all are in various ways), we need to be a servant leader, and honor God in how we treat those under our authority. Examine yourself - where do you have leadership roles, and do you show yourself as a servant to those in your charge?
