1 Samuel 4:7 - Additional Comments

They, too, had the same misperception that the Hebrews had, of the purpose for the ark.
Such a thing had never happened before. Previously the Philistines merely had to fight against men, but now they had to fight against God. They didn't really understand who God was, or what this meant, but it was scary... especially since they had heard the stories about how God had helped Israel miraculously in the past (vs 8). They still saw God as a super man, not as who He truly is, supreme over all, so they thought they could fight against him if they fought well (vs 9). The problem is that they completely won the battle, so that reinforced their mistaken belief that they could fight against the Hebrews even when God (i.e the ark) was on their side (vss 10-11).
