Without a word from Saul on what their quest was, Samuel was able to answer it. Now THAT is a true prophet!
Then come Samuel's very heavy words, that Israel's desire is on Saul and his household. Saul questions this (9:21), being from the smallest tribe, and even the smallest family in the smallest tribe. God does not look for status but character.
