1 Timothy 1:1 - Additional Comments
Timothy was the son of the devout Jewish woman Eunice (2 Tim 1:5), and a Greek father (Acts 16:1).
Eunice must have played a strong role in his faith, because Paul wrote that Timothy had known the Scripture since childhood (2 Tim 3:15).
Timothy became a Christian when Paul preached in Lystra, Timothy's home town (Acts 16:1).
Paul invited Timothy to go with him on his second missionary journey, but had Timothy circumcised to avoid criticism by sensitive Jews (Acts 16:3).
Although young and timid (1 Cor 16:10), Timothy stayed behind at Berea with Silas while Paul moved on to Athens and Corinth (Acts 17:13-15). He rejoined Paul (Acts 18:5), then was sent back to Thessalonica to strengthen the congregation there (Acts 19:22, 1 Thess 3:2).
After another sojourn with Paul (Acts 20:4), Timothy was sent to Corinth to straighten out some of the many problems distressing the young congregation there (1 Cor 4:17).
Timothy later looked after Paul during Paul's imprisonment.
Timothy subsequently was asked to go to Ephesus to represent Paul, and there received the two letters from Paul. These letters show that Timothy was like a son to Paul (1 Tim 1:2, 2 Tim 1:2).
Timothy was imprisoned but eventually released (Heb 13:23).
