2 Chronicles 1:1 - The Message

Solomon son of David took a firm grip on the reins of his kingdom. God was with him and gave him much help. Solomon addressed all Israel— the commanders and captains, the judges, every leader, and all the heads of families. Then Solomon and the entire company went to the worship center at Gibeon—that’s where the Tent of Meeting of God was, the one that Moses the servant of God had made in the wilderness. The Chest of God, though, was in Jerusalem—David had brought it up from Kiriath Jearim, prepared a special place for it, and pitched a tent for it. But the Bronze Altar that Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made was in Gibeon, in its place before the Tabernacle of God; and that is where Solomon and the congregation gathered to pray. Solomon worshiped God at the Bronze Altar in front of the Tent of Meeting; he sacrificed a thousand Whole-Burnt-Offerings on it.

2 Chronicles 1:1 - Additional Comments

See the note for 1 Chronicles 1:1.
2 Chronicles covers the same ground as 1 and 2 Kings, except it omits the narratives about the kings of the seceded Ten Tribes.
Israel had gone about 400 years (since Moses) with only a tent (i.e. the Tabernacle) as God's dwelling place among them, and it seems God was satisfied (2 Samuel 7:5-7).
Yet when it seemed expedient that they have a temple, God wanted to have a way as to the kind of building it should be, and gave the plans for it to David, in his "own handwriting" (1 Chron 28:19, Exodus 25:9), that it would be exceedingly magnificent, famous and glorious throughout all countries" (1 Chron 22:5).
David had wanted to build the temple, but was forbidden, because he was a man of war (1 Chron 22:8). God helped David in his wars, but, it appears, that God thought it not best for a man of war to be the builder of God's House, lest subdued nations feel bitter toward Israel's God. After all, it was God's purpose that through His nation, other nations would be won to Himself.
The Temple was built of great stones, cedar beams and boards, and overlaid with gold (1 Kings 6:14-22, 7:9-12). The material used in building the Temple (1 Chron 22:14-16, 29:2-9) is estimated in modern dollars to be equal to 2-5 billion dollars.
The Temple was built by 30,000 Israelites, and 150,000 Canaanites (1 Kings 5:13-16, 2 Chron 2:17, 18, 8:7-9). It took 7 years to build (1 Kings 6:38). It took 13 years to build Solomon's house (1 Kings 7:1).
Every part of the Temple was prepared at a distance from the site, and put in place without any hammer or tool (1 Kings 6:7).
Jerusalem was built on 5 hills. David's Wall covered the Southeast hill. Solomon's Wall is thought to have included Central East and Southwest hills. Solomon's Palace stood just south of the Temple Court. South of the Palace was Solomon's Throne Room. South of that was the house of the Forest of Lebanon (1 Kings 7:2).
Solomon's Temple stood 400 years (970-586 BC) (plundered 5 years after his death), Zerubbabel's 500 years (520-20 BC), and Herod's (refurbished temple) 90 years (20 BC - 70 AD).
