2 Corinthians 13:5 - The Message

Test yourselves to make sure you are solid in the faith. Don’t drift along taking everything for granted. Give yourselves regular checkups. You need firsthand evidence, not mere hearsay, that Jesus Christ is in you. Test it out. If you fail the test, do something about it. I hope the test won’t show that we have failed. But if it comes to that, we’d rather the test showed our failure than yours. We’re rooting for the truth to win out in you. We couldn’t possibly do otherwise.   We don’t just put up with our limitations; we celebrate them, and then go on to celebrate every strength, every triumph of the truth in you. We pray hard that it will all come together in your lives.

2 Corinthians 13:5 - New American Standard Bible

Test yourselves {to see} if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you--unless indeed you fail the test?

2 Corinthians 13:5 - Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy

Pònganse a prueba para ver si están en la fe. Examìnense a sì mismos. ¿O no se reconocen a ustedes mismos de que Jesucristo está en ustedes, a menos de que en verdad no pasen la prueba?

2 Corinthians 13:5 - World English Bible

2 Corinthians 13:5 - Young's Living Translation

Your ownselves try ye, if ye are in the faith; your ownselves prove ye; do ye not know your ownselves, that Jesus Christ is in you, if ye be not in some respect disapproved of?

2 Corinthians 13:5 - Additional Comments

The U.S. Supreme Court has criteria set up for testing one's faith (1972 Wisconsin vs Yoder). Criteria was set up to see if a person's claim to certain religious beliefs could stand up it court. If we were accused of being a Christian, how much evidence would there be to convict us?
What it is not -
1. A belief system beyond simple preferences.
2. Just a philosophy
- Showing the basis for what we believe
- Do we know what we believe- could we say in concrete terms what we believe based on our own studies.
- If we had to explain what we believe - could we.- Rom 10:2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.
Criteria for determining whether a belief system is not just a preference or philosophy but a genuine conviction.
What it is --
- U.S. Supreme Court said, if it will stand up in court by way of religious beliefs you would have to be able to say it was a conviction.
- True convictions are intimately related to daily living.
- Their belief pervades and determines virtually their entire way of life
- They feel that they can come into that life and test whether or not everything about that life is involved in that belief system.
1. True convictions have a history
- Not something they just started practicing. They want to see a history. We give each other room to grow but the Court system wants to see a history we receive others who are weaker, but the courts may not - Romans 14:1).
2. True convictions are personal
- Nothing to do with others in your family
- Even if you live with an unbeliever who totally mocks your faith
- Even when nobody's around
3. True convictions are preserved against the pressure to conform.
- No matter how much the world would pressure them to conform to their way of life they could not get them to change. Rom. 12:1-2
- Specific kind of mercy God has for us when He sees that we are making a mess of things. This is for people who He sees getting themselves in big trouble.
4. True convictions are unchanging regardless of circumstances
- The U.S. Supreme Court system standard for true convictions. Have to be able to see it in their life.
- You can truly judge what a person lives for by what he'd die for. Lots of people would die for money.
