2 Peter 1:19 - The Message

We couldn’t be more sure of what we saw and heard—God’s glory, God’s voice. The prophetic Word was confirmed to us. You’ll do well to keep focusing on it. It’s the one light you have in a dark time as you wait for daybreak and the rising of the Morning Star in your hearts. The main thing to keep in mind here is that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of private opinion. And why? Because it’s not something concocted in the human heart. Prophecy resulted when the Holy Spirit prompted men and women to speak God’s Word.

2 Peter 1:19 - New American Standard Bible

{So} we have the prophetic word {made} more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.

2 Peter 1:19 - World English Bible

We have the more sure word of prophecy; whereunto you do well that you take heed, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns, and the day star arises in your hearts:

2 Peter 1:19 - Young's Living Translation

And we have more firm the prophetic word, to which we do well giving heed, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, till day may dawn, and a morning star may arise -- in your hearts;

2 Peter 1:19 - Additional Comments

The "prophetic word" is the Old Testament, speaking of the same facts that in the New Testament are history. (Matt 11:13 - the OT consisted of the law and the prophets, and the NT is the events beginning with John the Baptist.) What we have in the events of the New Testament are confirmations of the prophecies of the Old Testament. Here is more proof against these stories being fables (vs 16). First we have Peter's firsthand account of God's declaaration of who Jesus is, and now we also have fultilled prophesy.
Note that the OT is history and prophesy, and the NT is also history and prophesy - the history of the OT prophesies fulfilled plus the as yet unfulfilled prophesies of the end times.
So what do we have? A demonstration of the truth of the Bible. The miracles and the fulfilled prophesies - both of equal value as evidence - Luke 16:31 - you either believe both or neither will be convincing. These evidences for us who believe serve to solidify our faith. Our faith does not rest on them, does not require them, but they do make the faith that exists even stronger.
Seeing the truthfulness in these words, we need to react to them as they require - we need to heed them! For, they are a light (of truth) in the midst of great darkness (the lies and fables that diverge from this truth).
Note that you cannot heed these words unless you know them! And how do you get to know them? Hearing, reading, studying.
If the word is told to others by us, since the word is a light in darkness, we become lights in darknesss (Matt 5:14-16). We are to let this light, our light, shine in the world. But note that we are only lights because of the light that shines in and through us - it is not really our light.
For those in darkness, it is tough - to come to the light they have to acknowledge that they are in darkness and need the light. Ah, but how beautiful it is when they come to the light! And the light continues to get brighter (Prov 4:18),
